![]() If I hadn't done that, I probably would have ended up shelving it and never finishing it.īasically, the first disc is very "traditional square open world" in terms of how you play. I just maxed my levels and avoided all encounters I could to finish up the game. Still glad I played it and finished it, but honestly I ended up cheating and gamesharking it because I couldn't stand the combat. Good characters, fun art style, inspiring locations, but I found the combat to be tedious and boring and the story felt cliched to me. The combat system is very complex and will take a lot of time to understand, but if you can grasp it, you will become addicted. Vagrant Story is one of the most underrated games of all time. That said, it definitely has some glaring flaws in the translation and pacing departments. I really think every JRPG fan should play it at least once even if they don't end up liking it. Not my favorite RPG of all time, my favorite game of all time. Xenogears is my favorite game of all time. I'm hoping to give it a try at some point.Ī little late, but I'll add my two cents: It did have a fantastic combat system though, and I have heard that the original is better. I've spent some time with the sequel and didn't like it, largely because the plot and characters came across as absurdly generic. There's a great article on the game here. I tried playing it and just could not get into the combat and upgrade systems, but I plan to give it another try. However, the game is VERY unconventional, and you may or may not like it. Vagrant Story has amazing art, an awesome atmosphere, and from what I've heard, an amazing story. It's kind of like a cross between Evangelion and Final Fantasy. Xenogears has one of the greatest stories of all time, VERY philosophical in nature. It's tied with Suikoden II for my favorite JRPG of all time (barring my favorite series, which I'm not sure if it counts as a JRPG.
